The Friday Brief: Week Ending 4/24/2009

Your Weekly Friday Brief, Fresh Off the ‘Net

Every Friday at The Inspired Solo, we deliver a collection of links representing the best of the web in the past week, nicely categorized and presented for your reading enjoyment. We do the work so you don’t have to, because that’s just how we roll.

Blogging and Other Tech Stuff

  • Law Firm Blogger: “Weekend Reading: ABA Techshow Edition” — a roundup of articles on the recent ABA Techshow.
  • Problogger: “Get Your Free Membership Site Masterplan Report” — Darren Rowse links to Yaro Starak’s new project, which will teach you how to create a membership site, starting with his free report. Longtime TIS readers know that Yaro was my blog coach for some time; I can vouch for the content-rich products he usually produces. Membership sites are probably an unfamiliar avenue for most solo lawyers and other service professionals, but it’s an interesting idea to play around with if you’re interested in creating additional revenue streams.

For The Recently Laid-Off

  • Manage Your Life: “How to Hire a Career Coach” — could a career coach help you find your way? I believe in coaching, of course (I am one), and I’ve experienced firsthand the incredible boost in personal and professional effectiveness that comes from a solid coaching relationship.
  • Lawyerist:“Out of Work? How to Make Your Free Time Pay Off” — Some good suggestions on how to make the most of your time out of the office after being laid off.
  • Nolo Legal Marketing Blawg: “Is Bad Publicity Better Than No Publicity? Not Necessarily in an Internet Age” — While you’re deciding how to spend that free time, take the time to think about the image you present to future employers and clients. All sole proprietors engaged in the delivery of professional services need to be aware of their online reputation. This post by super-solo-hero Carolyn Elefant has some interesting thoughts on managing your online identity. Be sure to follow and read the links Carolyn shares in this article, especially Professor Solove’s book.

The Healthy Solo: Mind, Body, Life

That’s it for this week! On a personal note, please keep my adopted hometown of North Myrtle Beach (and our neighbor, Myrtle Beach) in your thoughts and prayers this weekend, as we keep an eye on this horrific wildfire that’s created 2,500 evacuees and destroyed over 90 homes and 20,000 acres.
