Olivera Medenica has written a very helpful article about networking for Law.com’s Small Firm Business site.
The article takes a smart approach, in my view, by confronting the elephant in the room head-on: most attorneys are highly resistant to networking. Why is that? Theories vary, as do reasons, I suppose, but for my money, the biggest turn-off is the view of networking as “schmoozing” — something fake, insincere, and completely self-interested.
Once I stopped thinking of networking in this way and began viewing it for what it really is — creating relationships — the process became much less distasteful and even (dare I say?) enjoyable.
Hat tip to Lisa Solomon for pointing out this article.
