Macs Practice Law: Mercury News Reporter Admits – "Never Been a Better Time to Switch"

Just ran across this little gem from The Mercury News titled “Tech Talk: Apple Lures Even Loyal Windows Users” by Dean Takahashi.

As I look at a newly arrived MacBook Air laptop, it occurs to me there has never been a better time to switch to a Mac.

That’s not something I say lightly. With the exception of a couple of years working at a magazine, I have never been a Mac user. After all, I’m a game player and games on the Mac are always light years behind games on Windows. I’ve not been smitten by Steve Jobs’ famous “reality distortion field,” and have decades behind me as a Microsoft user.

But Apple keeps moving forward, and Microsoft took a step backward with Windows Vista. Both systems crash. I’ve heard tech-support complaints on both sides and witnessed a few myself. Vista is noticeably slower than its predecessor, while Apple’s newest operating system, Leopard, is a big improvement on a lot of fronts.

I dig the new Air model. For those who haven’t heard, this was debuted recently by Steve Jobs in dramatic fashion when he pulled it out of an interoffice manila envelope – seriously. It’s that thin.

I’m not sure Air is a solid office choice, though — at least, not as a primary computer. This is due primarily to its hard drive size limitations (80 GB).

It surely could be a tremendous asset on out-of-office trips (courtroom, consults away from the office, depositions, etc.) due to its extreme portability.

But if Apple’s Macbook Air gets more people looking at the entire line, then that’s great. As we said earlier today — the aesthetics of the Mac often catch the Windows user’s eye. But it’s the out of the box functionality and stability that will open the wallet, in my view.
