So, it’s happened, at long last. The moment I’ve been waiting for pretty much all year — the ticking of the clock from 11:59:59, on the last date in 2007, and the rollover into a brand new year, 2008.
I’ve alluded in past posts to the fact that — to put it mildly — 2007 was a bear of a year for me. My own little annus horribilis, as it were (and no, I’m not going to launch into the litany of woes here — it’s not relevant, it’s too personal, and, let’s face it, does anyone really want to hear it? I don’t). I feel as if I have reached the top of a huge mountain and am finally gulping in great big breaths of fresh air, after a year of smog and obstacles.
And so I find myself thinking — OK, now what?! I made it. Now what do I do?
Actually, I know exactly what to do — I’ve been thinking about it all year long. There were certain unpleasant events I had to wade through. We all do, from time to time. But now that they’re over, I know what to do because I spent the time wisely: evaluating not only how to get through the tough spot, but what to do afterwards.
Life, and the practice (and business) of law, are journeys — not destinations. It might be a trite cliche, but it’s only a cliche because it’s got a large seed of truth at its center.
So, where are you going in 2008? Do you have the courage to make some tough goals, and commit publicly to reaching them? I do. And I’m going to do that — tomorrow. But first, I wanted to ask you: what are YOU going to do this year? Where are you taking your law practice in 2008? Are you just riding the wave? Or are you planning the journey?
