If you’re like me – a new solo, new practice areas, new to self-employment and private practice both – well, let’s just say “time’s at a premium.” Add in single parenthood and a wealth of other interests to boot (someday, I will finish that novel – oh, and the one I’m writing, too …), and it’s a recipe for disaster.
Or speed reading. Or – if you’re reading digitally, at least- Spreed! It’s a free online speed reader. You can optimize Spreed by playing around with chunk size (number of words that appear on the screen at one time), the height and width of the display box, the speed (words per minute), even the color of the text and background. I started with 1-word chunks, 300 words per minute (about average for most non-speed readers), in a 500 by 100 box, black on white. But the more I played with Spreed, the faster I got, until I was up to 800 words per minute in 3 word chunks (I also realized the 800 by 100 sized box was much better and prevented word wrap). And much to my surprise, I found I wasn’t missing any of the meaning of the articles being read.
It even comes with a handy bookmarklet you can stick in your browser tool bar for quick use as you’re browsing your favorite blogs and news sites. Definitely worth playing with.
